Shu-Chun Hsiao

Born in 1984, Shu-Chun Hsiao is a Taipei, Taiwan based Product Designer. He earned a BA and MA degree at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in Taipei. In 2009, Shu-Chun took part in Platform 8 of Design Products, Royal College of Art in London, where he found a great design issue in discussing the synthetic facts on product design. He's especially interested in finding the new relationships between people and objects, creating products which interact better with the users and audiences.

The cemented usb drive tells the digital capacity by its weight. A concrete volume may clearly express the concept of digital data.

The suspended chimes will play sound when sensing the electromagnetic field in the air. Movements are made by the invisible force and respond with a harmony sound. Any audience making a call may trigger the chime, actually feeling the invisible existings. The project suggests the audience to switch the phone into a silent mode and then shall experience with the chimes without disturbing people.

The EMF chimes take the wind chimes as the vehicle to reveal the invisible electromagnetic field, like the breeze swinging the chimes. The electromagnetic field is an insensible, intangible and an abstract physic phenomenon to human sensibility. Some researches show that the EMF might in a way interfere with human’s health. As we become more rely on the wireless electronic devices, the EMF chimes provide an elegant approach to remind people with these infrared rays surrounding us.

The floor lamp transformed the experience of pulling the cord of the curtain into a lamp dimmer. To light up a room from dark or blind the sun, the falling string of the curtain caries a strong language of brightness adjustment.

Very much like the fishing reel, the secret keeping box would record sound by cranking backwards on its handle. To send the recorded sound out, crank it forward and the speaker would then play the sound out of the box. 

Adjusting the volume of the music by a ball valve on a sound pipe makes it easier to understand the concept of "sound wave". The sound valve would block and release the sound by different level just like the compressed air coming out of the steel tube.
